Description
Self-Brett® by BiorSelf Detection Kit:
The Self-Brett® Detection Kit offers an innovative, semi-quantitative solution, enabling on-site analysis without the need for specialised laboratories or personnel. The presence of Brettanomyces yeast can significantly impact the quality of alcoholic beverages, leading to undesirable off-flavours and aromas. For winemakers, early and accurate detection of this spoilage microorganism is paramount.

Understanding Brettanomyces with Advanced Detection Kits
Self-Brett® is a cutting-edge device designed for the rapid detection of Brettanomyces in various alcoholic beverages, including wine. What makes this detection kit stand out is their combination of a species-specific, culture-dependent method with user-friendly dip-slide technology. This allows producers to conduct self-controlled analyses directly at the production site, ensuring immediate insights into their product’s microbial health. Remarkably, this detection kit is also effective when used with washing water, providing a comprehensive sanitation assessment.
Users can evaluate the presence of Brettanomyces through three clear indicators: a colour change in the medium (from blue to yellowish), the development of the characteristic ‘Brett odour,’ and the visible observation of colonies on the agar medium. A negative result indicates the absence of contamination when all three conditions are negative. Conversely, if the colour changes, the odour develops, and colonies are observed, contamination is confirmed. The level of contamination—low, medium, or high—can be estimated based on the quantity of colonies present.
Effortless Application of Your Detection Kits
Using Self-Brett® Detection Kits is straightforward. Simply unscrew and extract the slide, fill the container with 20mL of the beverage to be analysed, shake gently for 60 seconds, then empty and drain. After closing, the kit is left at room temperature for 5 days for incubation. For optimal accuracy, it’s crucial to homogenise the sample before use to account for cell sedimentation. These Detection Kits offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional laboratory analyses, with a shelf-life of 12 months when stored properly between 10-25°C and away from light. Self-Brett is intended for professional use, empowering producers to proactively manage microbial quality.
